What Is One Interview Question to Ask to Assess Culture Fit?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

The question I suggest my clients ask is, “What’s most important to you in your next job or organization? What will you need to see or hear to believe we might be the right choice for you?” What this does is invite the person being interviewed to talk about the work and environment they want to work in by asking a question they probably haven’t heard before and thus are unprepared for. A person will be more likely to give an honest answer when they’ve never heard the question and, thus, when you hear their answer, you can ask a clarifying question to understand their thinking or tell them that yours is not an environment that can provide them with what they are looking for.

Stupid Hiring Mistakes: Not Preparing or Coaching Hiring Managers

I commented, “Pick up the pace of your process. I am not saying that you should hire someone for the sake of hiring someone. When you interview, identify people who are qualified. Reject everyone else. Make a decision to hire or not. If you don’t want to hire them, communicate the decision. Get everyone on the same page about criteria to evaluate for BEFORE people start interviewing to avoid mixed messages that turn off qualified people. Make a decision within 2 weeks of meeting someone. If you revise your requirements, reinterview people who you previously found acceptable instead of summarily rejecting them. Make a decision instead of stringing people along waiting for the super-candidate that never shows up. No one is perfect. Not you or your new hire.”
