                                           “There are sharks and minnows in the world. If you don’t know which one you are, you aren’t the shark.”

I usually take an easy-going tone with what I write but I am paying attention to what smart financial people are warning about in 2023. Bloomberg said they believe there is a 100% likelihood of a recession next year. A CNBC survey of economists released today said they expect a modest recession in 2023.

I don’t know what a modest recession is. It either is or isn’t a recession. I’ll also say I’ve never seen a soft landing in my many years of listening to financial journalists reporting on the subject.

My encouragement to you is to look at recession-proofing your career, not your job. Recession-proofing your job is not in your control. Recession-proofing your career is. I have a YouTube playlist that will offer a few ideas. Most are <1 minute. I don’t believe any are more than 5 minutes. Take action NOW on a few of the ideas.

Also, within your current workplace, if you have the opportunity to affect action and/or change, start pushing people to be more aggressive with your corporate competition and don’t just look to build new. Try to take sales from your competition.

When times become more difficult, the pie is smaller. You will want some of your competitor’s pie.

Here are a few things to do proactively in case you’re laid off. After all, once you’re told, they are not going to give you much time to get your data.

Despite ongoing global uncertainty and high-profile layoffs, labor markets remain resilient

Have you seen LinkedIn’s State of the Labor Market released today? The initial 3 points of the report are:

  • The Great Reshuffle is morphing into a period of Great Mismatch, where demand for remote work opportunities continues to greatly exceed supply.
  • Layoffs in media, tech and information continue in a labor market that’s still robust, but slowing rates of hiring suggest that rebalancing in the labor market is under way.
  • Workers are starting to shelter in place a bit more, as the uncertainty picks up. This is a 180 degree turn from last year when members switching jobs was growing at 50% per year.

There is much more worth reading in it.

 

Firms are about to shift to looking for people who can take someone else’s lunch. This isn’t just about salespeople. It’s about an attitude shift.
